We want to send a big Mahalo to our keiki cover boy ‘Oli Tysei Barroll Mitchell and his family this month.

‘Oli’s dad is Ryan Mitchell, server at Mama’s Fish House, and mom is Eri Mitchell of Maui Seaside Hotel.

The family lives in Kahului, and ‘Oli is starting first grade at Lihikai School.

He loves to dance Tahitian, and in his first solo competition in Kaua’i at Heiva I Kaua‘i 2016 he took first place in the four-year-old and six-year-old categories! ‘Oli  also enjoys going to the beach with his family and body boarding.

Dad shares, “my son inspires me to share the aloha spirit every day.”

upcountry farmers market: indulge your senses in maui’s plentiful bounty

Every Saturday morning, rain or shine, Upcountry Farmers Market Manager Neil Coshever and his capable assistant Katy Bayley orchestrate an extraordinary symphony at the Kulamalu Town Center in Pukalani. Now in its 7th year at this location, the Upcountry Farmers Market (UFM) boasts more than 100 vendors, and attracts between 1,500 and 2,000 visitors to its cornucopia of enticing products.

No other farmers market has been operating on Maui as long as UFM. For more than 40 years, UFM has made its home in various locations—first at St. Joseph’s Church in Makawao; then at the Eddie Tam Gymnasium, also in Makawao. In 2010, the market moved to its current site in Pukalani, which has allowed for exponential growth. In fact, the market is now officially “full,” and new vendors are able to rent a booth only when a regular vendor is absent. chef alvin savella is killing it in the kitchen at ritz-carlton, kapalua’s banyan tree restaurant

In one of his publicity photos, Chef Alvin Savella’s facial expression is intense, and he’s brandishing a purple-hued, bumpy-fleshed octopus in each hand. In another, he’s staring intently at a tangled mass of raw ramen noodles into which both hands are buried. His Instagram handle is @thekitchenassassin. It’s this fiery passion for all things culinary that landed him the position of head chef at The Banyan Tree, The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua’s signature restaurant, in October of 2016. “Chef Savella brings a fresh perspective and boisterous personality to the already talented Banyan Tree team,” says Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua General Manager Mike Kass.
