mm medical transport: serving maui’s visitors in need of medical help & transportation

Fourteen years ago, Maui physical therapist Michael Malaczewski saw a need to assist patients who had been injured or fallen ill on their trip to Maui. He had a client who needed his help and he flew with them to the mainland handling everything from start to finish. This need soon became MM Medical Transport, a business that he started to focus on providing safe transportation from the island of Maui for clients who needed help getting home.

Getting through an airport and on a plane are things many people take for granted. What happens when a traveler becomes injured, and is, at least temporarily, in a wheelchair? Do they get in the same line for TSA, or a different one? Do they absolutely have to stand to walk through the metal detector? How do they get back to the 21st row on the airplane if they can’t walk?

MM Medical Transport assists with:

• Management of ground logistics: Travel to and from airport at origin and destination locations including taxi, wheelchair van, gurney, etc.

certificate for customer service in hawai’i offered starting september 24

UH Maui College’s Office of Continuing Education and Training (OCET) is accepting applications for the Certificate for Customer Service in Hawai‘i, developed by Kapiolani Community College and the Hawai’i Tourism Authority. The foundation of the program is based on the Native Hawaiian culture to develop practical skills that help provide a gratifying and memorable guest experience for our community and global customers.

Maui’s premier provider of mobility equipment rentals recognized that many of our visitors cannot participate in or take advantage of certain attractions and activities on our island because they have trouble walking distances or walking up hills. Maui Mobility Systems is now offering the use of their electric mobility scooters at favorite visitor sites. These scheduled day trips make it easy for the whole family to enjoy the adventure without leaving anyone back at the hotel. Maui Mobility delivers the scooters to the site, trains the guests on the use of the scooter, provides additional goodies, and picks up the scooters at the end of the excursion. computer_docnowhawaiiWe recently had a chance to sit down with Dr. Norm Estin, Medical Director of DOCNOW to learn about a new medical service on Maui which puts your guests in immediate two-way video contact with an urgent care doctor right over a laptop, tablet, or phone. Many of you may know Dr. Estin from his 30 years of work as Medical Director of the Doctors On Call Urgent Care locations on the West Side.

TMC: Tell us about this new service for Maui’s visitors. How did you come up with the idea?

Dr. Estin: We see so many visitors and residents in our Doctors On Call offices that have easy problems to solve. It is called DOCNOW, and the doctors there can diagnose and treat patients with a videovisit right over a computer, tablet, or smartphone from the comfort of their hotel room. Prescriptions are called or emailed to the local pharmacy and ready for pick up just like that, fast and easy.

This new business is run by the well-known Maui doctor Norm Estin MD and his team at the Doctors On Call Urgent Care centers on West Maui.
