2017 maui plein air painting invitational february 18-26

painting_carleton-kincade_img_0532Beginning Saturday, February 18, the 2017 Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational will bring together top plein air artists from Hawai‘i and the mainland to capture Maui’s Upcountry vistas, pristine beaches, majestic mountains, and historic towns.

The event runs from Saturday, February 18, until Sunday, February 26. During the week-long event, the public will have three opportunities to observe 26 artists at work, from blank canvas to finished landscape or portrait in four hours or less. Included in the week are seven opportunities to view and purchase art.


Saturday, February 18 • 7:30 – 11am
Kick Off Paint Out Lahaina Harbor

Artists begin the event creating fresh paintings that are displayed for sale from 11:30am until 1pm in the Pioneer Inn’s Courtyard in Lahaina.

Monday, February 20 • 6 – 7pm
The Artists’ Mini-Paintings Silent Auction

Held in the Snug Harbor room at the Pioneer Inn from 6-7pm. Artists’ small paintings no smaller than 5×7 inches and no larger than 8×8 inches are featured for sale. FREE.

Monday, February 20 • 7 – 8pm
Jean Stern, Executive Director of The Irvine Museum in California will present a lecture, ‘The Art of Looking at ART.’

This lecture will be held in the courtyard of the Pioneer Inn. This is a ‘standing room’ only event. Plan to come early, view and buy art, and locate your seat in the courtyard. FREE and open to the public. No Host bar.

Wednesday, February 22 • 3 – 8pm
Sunset Paint Out

The Sunset paint out is sponsored by Montage Kapalua Bay from 3-6pm and is another opportunity to see all of the artists in the same vicinity. The artists will gather in Kapalua to find inspiration in the sunset and beach scenes.  A Hawaiian model is present for artists who may select to capture this image on canvas. The artists’ paintings will be on display and available for purchase in the Montage Kapalua Bay Sunset Room from 6:30-8pm.

Friday, February 24 • 9 – 11am
Hanaka‘o‘o Park (Canoe Beach) & Vicinity
Quick Draw sponsored by Mala, Honu, Frida’s Restaurants

The quick draw is a timed event where artists have just two hours to complete a painting. The public has an opportunity to watch a painting being created from start to finish. Canoes, along with surrounding beach, ocean, island views will provide for interesting imagery for the paintings.

Friday, February 24 • 6 – 9pm
‘Art in Your Heart’ Gala & Art Sale
Sponsored by Royal Lahaina Resort

Come meet the 26 MPAPI participating artists, view their paintings, and take one or more home with you. If you attended the event in the past, you know how much fun it is to see everyone positioning themselves to view the 100+ original paintings. If you have not attended, this is one of those art events that is a must attend event.  Seeing 100+ paintings in one location on Maui is pretty special. The ‘Art in Your Heart’ Gala & Art Sale sponsored by Royal Lahaina Resort is a ticketed event. Includes: A Hawaiian Welcome, Opening Remarks, Awards Presentation, Four Course Dinner, Entertainment, and  Live Auction highlighting the “Best In Show” award winning painting. This event provides an opportunity for art collectors wishing to buy paintings a priority viewing before the Artists’ Aloha Reception the next day (Saturday).

Ticket price is $175 per person plus processing fee. Tickets may be requested by completing the Request for Purchase of ‘Art in Your Heart’ Gala form. You will receive an email invoice for payment, allowing you to use your credit card. Your tickets are not confirmed until the invoice has been paid. You will receive confirmation of your ticket purchase and the ticket(s) will be at will call the night of the event. Limited seating.

Saturday, February 25 • 10am – 2pm
Artists’ Aloha Reception

This event provides an opportunity for the general public to view and purchase paintings. The artists will replace paintings sold on Friday night with new paintings. FREE and open to the public. Maui Youth Philharmonic Orchestra & Friends will provide classical music as background during the day. Light refreshments. Royal Lahaina Resort Ballroom Gallery remains open until 4pm.

Sunday, February 26 • 10am – 4pm
Plein Air Final Sale

Last chance to view and purchase paintings at the Royal Lahaina Resort Ballroom Gallery. Sale ends at 4pm.

Sunday, February 26 • 10am – 2pm
‘Color Me Happy’ Youth Art Event

Four groups of 10 keiki will participate in various art activities commensurate with age and skill level. Registration is required, limited to 40. Please complete online form. FREE.
