23rd annual celebration of the arts at the ritz-carlton, kapalua

CELEBRATIONARTS_Ritz_CA13_rjb-413For the 23rd consecutive year, The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua will bring together Hawai‘i’s most reputable artisans, educators, cultural practitioners, and entertainers for the most well-respected cultural event in the state, Celebration of the Arts.

This much anticipated event will fall over Mother’s Day weekend beginning Friday, May 8 and concluding Sunday, May 10, with an expansive Mother’s Day brunch. Throughout the weekend, visitors and residents alike are encouraged to bring their families to experience this cultural awakening, create their hand-made Mother’s Day gifts and reconnect over the host culture.

The theme for the 23rd anniversary of Celebration of the Arts, ‘I nā… Imagine,’ promises an inspirational look to the future exploring how we can join together and draw from the days of nostalgic Hawai‘i to have a positive impact on the future via contemporary paths. Opening ceremonies include Hawaiian practitioners reciting their genealogy through traditional oli (chants) while music and hula will be enjoyed continuously throughout the weekend. Hands-on art, demonstrations, cultural panels, music and dance will serve as the common thread to allow visitors and residents the opportunity to interact and appreciate the “#1 Rated Annual Festival” according to Modern Luxury Hawaii magazine. The event has also been the recipient of the “Keep it Hawaii Kahili Award,” a highly sought after honor presented by the Hawaii Tourism Association.

Thought-provoking and interactive sessions included in the 2015 event include:

“The United Nations of Polynesia”

A panel discussion to determine the possibility of the Pacific Ocean being the great connector to unite the Island Nations of Polynesia. How alike are the cultures and are they able to work together to protect their environment, health, commerce, education and political status?

“Na mea ai a ka wa’a kaulua…Cuisine of the Voyaging Canoe”

A food tasting experience of foods served aboard an ancient voyaging canoe.

“Who is Steering Our Canoe?”

A panel that will address corporate decisions coming from a sea of land that directly affects cultures that survive on a continent of water. Encouragement for Native Hawaiians to strive to achieve higher rankings – general managers, top executives, directors and doctors that will remain here and steer our course.

Also new for the 23rd Annual Celebration of the Arts is a unique opportunity to see “The Legend of Ko‘olau,” a one man play produced by Maui writer Gary Kubota and starring Moronai Kanekoa. The play tells the story of a Hawaiian family fighting to stay together following the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii and the declaration that leprosy must send their patriarch to the colony of Kalaupapa. This play has toured the continental USA and Hawaii with rave reviews. For more details, please visit http://www.thelegendofkoolau.com.

Celebration of the Arts culminates with the highly sought after Celebration Luau and Show. Unlike any other luau on the island, this event brings together traditional Hawaiian foods, star-studded entertainment and talent hearkening back to nostalgic Hawai‘i. Early ticket purchase is encouraged for this highly attended event. The Celebration After-Hours Party commences Friday and Saturday evenings and is held in the Alaloa Lounge at The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua.

These special evenings are packed with impromptu performances in a fun-filled jam session that reflects the spirit of aloha for which the islands are renowned. During Friday’s After-Hours Party, attendees can “Raise a Glass of Class with Hanaiali‘i” while enjoying the award winning female vocalist Amy Hanaiali‘i Gilliom and her newly released award winning Merlot. Saturday evening, Weldon Kekauoha takes over Alaloa Lounge for a night of music that won’t soon be forgotten as he travels from Oahu to Maui to top the event off.

Tickets for the Celebration Luau and Show and “The Legend of Ko‘olau” went on sale March 27. For more details including accommodations packages and ticket pricing, please visit the hotel’s website http://www.ritzcarlton.com/kapalua or http://www.celebrationofthearts.org.
